Waste Management System

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan aims to end open defecation by building individual and community toilets. A Behavioral Change Communication (BCC) campaign was launched in the village to address the problem of open defecation. The police and other civil society groups worked together to create awareness among the residents of the village.

Toilets are a necessity for every household, but it is equally important to ensure that the supporting infrastructure is managed in a planned manner. Hence, when we installed toilets, we also built a supporting infrastructure to ensure that every household has access to clean water supply, sewage waste management, and sanitation.

Along with the toilets and power supply, there was a need to provide a proper waste management system and septic tanks for the whole village. We applied for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) for the construction of a solid waste management site outside the village. A vermicompost plant was also constructed in the outskirts of the village as an extension to the solid waste management system. Manohar Reddy donated 5 lakh rupees to purchase a tractor with a trolley, and for the construction of the plant. This also provided employment to 6 villagers.

Today, the entire village has been successfully weaned off open defecation. A previously well know defecating point in the village is renovated and reconstructed into a beautiful park designed by a renowned landscape designer from Hyderabad.
